Wales Off-Road Motors Steering Group (WORMSG)

Emerging from a conference hosted by the Forestry Commission Wales and CCW in 2004, the Wales Off-Road Motorcycling Steering Group (WORSMG) was formed to try and develop a consensus to addressing three main issues:

• Effective enforcement of existing laws
• Provision/management of appropriate opportunities, and
• Responsible use & education.

The WORMS Group, which meets a number of times a year, is a partnership of user groups and other interested organisations, including CCW. The name of the group was modified in 2010 in recognition of their wider remit to consider all off-roading activity, including both motorcycling and 4x4 vehicle use. The Group’s work is guided by an Action Plan.
Two reports have been published (in 2006 and 2010) and these are available for download. The Reports include further information about the work of WORMSG partners across Wales as well as the Action Plan for the Group’s work going forward:

FULL SPEED AHEAD FOR YOUTH LEARNING PROGRAMME

CardiffCouncil is offering young people the opportunity to gain new skills and qualifications involved in motorcycle maintenance and off road motorcross riding through the Virtual Inclusion Programme.

ForeshoreMXC is a community project run by Cardiff Council in partnership with SportWales, Communities First and Countryside Council for Wales and allows young people the chance to learn about the sport of motorcross, a form of motorcycle racing held on enclosed off road circuits.

The project aims to provide a safe and controlled environment for young people to learn and develop new skills in riding and maintaining motorcycles through practical exercises and vocational training.

TheVirtual Inclusion Programme (VIP) offers a learning provision to mainstream pupils who are at risk of permanent exclusion.

The project provides an accredited course which raises confidence and self-esteem and encourages participation and self-expression.

All of the activities are accredited by the Open College Network (OCN) and are carried out by experienced Auto Cycle Union Certified Instructors.

 In addition to the practical learning, candidates also gain numeracy and literacy skills to help with personal and social development. 

The course which has been running for three years, takes place at the purpose built Foreshore MXC Training Centre which boasts state of the art facilities including, a workshop, classroom and off road bike tracks.

The six pupils currently enrolled on the course will attend the project during school term time and each individual will have the opportunity to achieve several awards including a Youth Challenge Award, The Lord Mayors Young Achievers Award, The Young Leaders Award and a Rookies Life Saving Award.

Pupil attendance and behaviour is monitored and as the programme progresses the amount of time based in mainstream school will increase with the result being full integration back into school.

There are several projects on the Virtual Inclusion Programme where pupils can collect addition credits, these include horse care and riding, first aid and life saving, fishing and fitness.

Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells said: “Foreshore MXC has been successfully delivering the Virtual Inclusion Programme providing young people with a wide and varied curriculum that is inspiring, interesting and fun.

“Pupils build good relationships and alter attitudes, making positive changes for the future having engaged in exciting and motivating activities.

“It helps to develop social and team building skills which in turn can have a positive impact on future employability and encourages long term change.

“The Foreshore MXC project continues to engage many youths in the community and help them move towards a healthy and active lifestyle.”

All New Motocross Club In Wales

Cardiff City Council has recently appointed a volunteer coordinator funded by the CCW country side council of Wales. The role will be to support a vibrant, club-based structure, which will help promote responsible riding practice and social awareness in and around motocross. The club will be a totally separate identity to CMX Centre Ltd who also operates on the same piece of land namely the CMX Centre although the club will be aiming to support CMX Ltd with volunteer opportunities.

The volunteer coordinators role will be to help encourage and stimulate volunteer opportunities at the off road bike site, sustaining and supporting a vibrant club structure, namely Foreshore MXC (Friends of the Foreshore Motocross Club.)

We aim to obtain ACU project status for Foreshore MXC to provide training opportunities within the sport of motocross for volunteers, set up and support motocross club competitions affiliated to the ACU at the CMX Centre site, and develop The Welsh Motocross Academy for riders demonstrating exceptional ability in Wales.


The club will be holding its first Club evening meeting at 7pm on Tuesday 20th January, at the LLynfi Arms Tondu nr Bridgend, to discuss the future of Welsh motocross. Welsh motocross superstar Mark Jones has kindly lent the club the use of his Function room, and will be supplying light refreshments (cheers Jonesy) and will also be in attendance along with other Welsh motocross superstars, to help shape the way of Welsh Motocross.
