Satellite tracking used to tackle Powys quad bike theft
The BBC News are reporting that police have equipped a quad bike with a satellite tracker in a bid to combat thefts of the vehicles.
A similar tracker system with a Dyfed-Powys Police force-owned vehicle has helped cut car thefts in Powys by 25% in three years.
Organised gangs have stolen about 50 of the all-terrain vehicles, worth over £230,000, in Powys since 2009.
Police believe the stolen quad bikes are ending up in countries such as Ireland and in eastern Europe.
Criminals targeting farms in Wales stole equipment worth £1.7m in 2010, a survey found last year.
The quad bike has been a regular feature on farms for a number of years. Farmers, including Wales' many hill farmers, use them to haul feed and check livestock.
Dyfed-Powys Police have managed to recover about seven stolen bikes worth £34,000, but it is hoped the satellite tracker - on a quad bike owned by the force - can help trace more.
Sgt Kelvin Briggs said: "We first applied satellite tracking to a car in 2009 and we saw car theft, and thefts from cars in the county, drop by 25% in three years."We're now using it in the fight against quad bike thieves."
Sgt Briggs said police had a rough idea who was responsible for stealing quad bikes.
"Criminal groups are coming into the area and targeting the equipment which in the past has ended up in the Republic of Ireland, but because the economy there is so flat at the moment we think they're now being sent to Poland," he added.
"Our quad bike can be located in crime hotspots and if it's stolen we can track it from a central computer."
Sgt Briggs said the force quad bike would be used in Powys for the moment, but it could be located anywhere in the force area.
Security devices
He said Dyfed-Powys Police were working with other forces, which used similar satellite tracking equipment, and had the opportunity to share equipment. Sgt Briggs said satellite tracking was still being used in the fight against car crime. Welcoming the initiative, Farmers' Union of Wales (FUW) director of business development Emyr James said theft of quad bikes was on the increase. He said farmers used them to make getting around easier and many farmers would be lost without them.
"Thieves seem to believe that because they are acting in rural areas they are more likely to get away with the theft," he said. "Farmers, too, may believe they are safer in rural areas and this may lead to some failing to ensure their property is secure at all times.
"Crime prevention is sadly needed and tracker devices fitted onto quad bikes are one way of perhaps getting back your bike if it is stolen."
Mr James said farmers should also be aware of the numerous alarms and security devices on the market.

New delivery of KTMs stolen, 36 new junior motocross bikes stolen from lorry
A delivery of 36 new KTM junior motocross motorcycles has
been stolen from a lorry in Kent on the evening of Friday December 9.
Thieves took 35 KTM 50 SXs and one 65 SX. The bikes were
still in their individual transportation boxes, still requiring a small amount
of assembly from the dealerships they were intended for.
The 50 and 65 SX Sport Minicycles are incredibly popular
motorcross machines for junior riders.
The theft has many implications and not only makes availability
of the 50 SX extremely difficult but will very much spoil Christmas for many
families as the majority of the bikes stolen were pre-ordered via KTM dealers
ready to arrive as gifts.
Even though these are off-road bikes, each machine has a
unique VIN (vehicle identification number) and engine number that can be used
to trace its identity. Police and KTM dealers have these details and, together
with KTM UK, will be working with motocross clubs and tracks across the country
to make sure these stolen machines are returned.
Shaun Sisterson, Managing Director of KTM UK, said: “This
theft has a massive affect on availability of the bikes and will result in a
lot of disappointed children this Christmas as we are aware that many of the
bikes stolen were earmarked as gifts.
“We’re doing all we can to get additional replacement units
in time for Christmas, however these models are in short supply. We’re sorry
for any inconvenience this has caused but the theft has been a matter out of
KTM’s control.”
Anybody with potential information regarding these bikes can
contact KTM UK on 01280 709500.
Girls, Girls, Girls!!!
The prize to join the ranks of the Monster Girls, head to some of the best events on the planet and to get a spot on the 2012 Monster Energy calendar shoot had the applications testing the limits of the site www.monstergirlsearch.com.
Fortunately for the masses of fans around Europe, they were left with a feast of beauties to check out and ultimately vote for. And boy did they vote.
Entries poured in from South Africa to Finland and the web was flooded with some of the hottest and frankly coolest chicks out there. Keeping up with the Monster Girls’ reputation for being capable of lighting up any environment, the votes followed the hottest but also the girls with a ton of attitude.
The winners of Monster Girl Search 2012 were shortlisted by the public vote before the very same athletes who the winning girls would go on to hang out with made their picks. Unsurprisingly, the likes of Ken Block didn’t seem to have much difficultly in sitting down and scoping the talent.
So here we have it - the best of the best, the cream of the crop and, even better, there’s a behind the scenes film of the girls in action shooting the 2012 calendar together. As part of the winning experience they also got to hang out at the Monza Rally Show with a certain Valentino Rossi who wasn’t shy about getting a photo taken with them all.
When the Monster Girls are unleashed on Europe in 2012 there’s going to be a whole new dimension of talent on show. These exclusive photos of the girls are hot as hell so feast your eyes on them all and don’t forget that the calendar shoot is only a taste of what’s in store.
